In ODIs, Mohammed Shami surpasses Stuart Binny’s nine-year record

After a thrilling semifinal match against New Zealand, India advanced to their fourth ODI World Cup final on Wednesday, November 15. Mohammed Shami was the player of the match winner thanks to his brilliant bowling effort, but Virat Kohli stole the show with his record-breaking 50th century.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-280553″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-750×422.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com in odis mohammed shami surpasses stuart binnys nine year record untitled design 20″ width=”1392″ height=”783″ title=”In ODIs, Mohammed Shami surpasses Stuart Binny's nine-year record 9″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-750×422.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-1024×576.jpg 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-768×432.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-390×220.jpg 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20-150×84.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-in-odis-mohammed-shami-surpasses-stuart-binnys-nine-year-record-untitled-design-20.jpg 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1392px) 100vw, 1392px” />
At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Shami returned with the greatest bowling numbers for India in the history of One-Day Internationals, 7/57, on a surface where a mammoth 724 runs were scored. He shattered Stuart Binny’s nine-year-old record and became the first Indian bowler to take seven wickets in an innings in the format.

In 2014, Binny scored six wickets in four wickets against Bangladesh at Mirpur, when a weak Indian side had only managed to defend 103 runs. Several players, including Mohammed Siraj (6/21), Anil Kumble (6/12), and Jasprit Bumrah (6/19), have taken six wickets in an innings, but Shami outperformed them all with a spectacular display at the venerable Wankhede.

Returning to Shami, it is shocking to realize that he did not participate in the starting lineup until after Hardik Pandya had an injury. After taking home the player of the match trophy, the guy himself said he was only waiting for his opportunity to play and win games for his nation. “I was holding out for my chance. Not that I was playing a lot of white ball cricket. We often discuss topics like yorkers and slower balls, so that’s what I had in mind. With the new ball, I attempted to take wickets. Using the new ball, I attempt to capture as many as I can. I failed to capture Kane. I felt awful. I attempted to slow down. They were trying to make their moves. So I ventured a guess.

“That was a nice wicket. The dread of dew was present. The grass was neatly clipped off. The runs were sufficient. Things may have gone south if dew had gotten in. Perhaps the slower balls were ineffective. I feel fantastic. This platform is enormous. We lost in the World Cup semifinals in both 2015 and 2019. attempting to profit from the opportunity I’ve been given. We’re not sure when we’ll all get this opportunity again,” Shami said after the game.
